Building bridges

What does it take to make a strong bridge?

Year 1 started the year with a full day of investigating ways to make a bridge strong enough to hold a weighted item.

We used construction toys to see if we could get from one side of the table to the other. After this the children investigated ways to change the properties of paper. They had to fold, bend, twist and scrunch to see how their paper bridge could be made stronger.

Lincoln Castle (Friday 5th January 2018)

REMINDER:

Dear Parents/Carers,

After the Christmas Holiday our new topic will be ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets.’ During this topic the children will learn about castles and castle life and famous structures around the world. They will make models of towers, bridges and tunnels and will write recounts, narratives and letters.

Each topic includes a ‘wow day’ to really excite and engage the children. For this topic we would like to take the children to Lincoln Castle on Friday 5th January. We aim to leave school for 9:00am in order to reach Lincoln Castle for 10:00am. The children will split into three groups and will take part in different activities throughout the day, including a wall walk around the castle wall, a medieval banquet, a jousting competition and shield making.

In order to fund the visit, we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £12.10. Please pay via Parent Pay no later than Wednesday 3rd January. Trips are organised to support children’s learning and so we would really appreciate your support.  Although contributions are voluntary, if we do not receive sufficient funding the trip will unfortunately have to be cancelled. Governors have agreed that any pupil eligible for pupil premium will not need to contribute and school will pay the contribution on their behalf.

The children will need to wear their school uniform and they should bring their lunch in a named bag or lunchbox. If you would like school to provide a packed lunch for the day, please order it via ParentPay by Friday 22nd December. As part of the visit involves an activity outside please provide your child with a waterproof coat in case of rain.

We are looking for some parent helpers for this trip. If you are available to come along and help, then please let the office staff know as soon as possible.

Kind Regards,

Mrs S Waters                                                                        Miss L Field
