A great first day back for Year 1 beach combing at Sandilands beach. The day started off warm and rainy however this did not put the children off playing in the sand, making sandcastles and digging holes.
After being covered in sand the children we really well behaved whilst listening the Skegness RNLI Lifeguard team. They informed us about beach safety and what we should do if we were unlucky enough to fall or get swept out to sea.

Once we returned to school the children participated in a smelly beach sorting activity as well as showing me their artistic flare when drawing beach hut scenes.

So, what exactly is phonics?
Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words
In phonics lessons children are taught three main things:
They are taught GPCs. This stands for grapheme phoneme correspondences. This simply means that they are taught all the phonemes in the English language and ways of writing them down. These sounds are taught in a particular order. The first sounds to be taught are s, a, t, p.
Children are taught to be able to blend. This is when children say the sounds that make up a word and are able to merge the sounds together until they can hear what the word is. This skill is vital in learning to read.
Children are also taught to segment. This is the opposite of blending. Children are able to say a word and then break it up into the phonemes that make it up. This skill is vital in being able to spell words.

Just a quick reminder about our Year 1 and Year 2 trip on the first day back. We are looking forward to our fun and exciting beach activities.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Miss Field and I will be your child’s class teacher in September.
When the children come back in September, their new topic will be ‘Land Ahoy.’ More details of this will follow in September.
As part of our topic ‘Land Ahoy’ we would like to take the children in Years 1 and 2 on a trip to the beach at Sandilands on Tuesday 5th September. We hope that this trip will really engage the children and capture their interest. During our visit, the children will listen to a presentation from the RNLI. They will also take part in a variety of activities including beachcombing, treasure hunting like real pirates and a range of art activities.
In order to fund the visit, we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £3.20. Please pay via Parent Pay before Monday 4th September. Trips are organised to support children’s learning and so we would really appreciate your support. Although contributions are voluntary, if we do not receive sufficient funding the trip will unfortunately have to be cancelled. Governors have agreed that any pupil eligible for pupil premium will not need to contribute and school will pay the contribution on their behalf.
The children will need to wear appropriate clothes for the beach (shorts, t-shirt, sandals and a sun hat) and they should bring a packed lunch in a named bag or lunchbox, along with a small activity for the journey if you wish. Unfortunately, school will be unable to provide packed lunches that day due to the delivery time. If your child would like to bring a bucket and spade to play with during their lunchtime break then this would be great.
We are looking for some parent helpers for this trip. If you are available to come along and help, then please let the office staff know as soon as possible.
